Welcome to the Brownie Bulletin

Actually to be honest I was hoping for Brownie Blog but it would appear that someone had already come up with that idea - although I am not sure they liked it as the last time they posted was 2004.

My name is Amy but my brownies know me more commonly as Night Owl. I run a brownie unit in the beautiful Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, Canada. This is my second year as an unit guider but will be my 13th year overall in the wonderful realm of guiding. Although I left guiding as a pathfinder, I rejoined because I wanted to pass on what I was taught onto those most willing to listen - Brownies!

I had never really thought of leading Sparks because they are a bit too young for me to handle and I am afraid the same can be said about Guides. Although it is an excellent group of kids, I think they are a bit too close to my height and age for me to handle so Brownies it was.

I myself was a brownie for three years - two years as a Gnome and one year as an Elf  but I always wanted to be a fairy.. looking back on it though Gnomes and Elves are pretty awesome as I haven't been to a unit yet that has these circles. When I was a brownie we wore the traditional brown dresses with the belt, penny pouch, badge scarf, tie, and hat. You had to wear brown socks and black shoes and bring pennies and dues every week. My mom was a Snowy Owl and most of my friends from school were in my pack '24th Sitka Brownies.' Here is a really old picture of me when I was in brownies I am sure that I have another one but I haven't been able to find it yet.
Somewhere in my collection of old things there is a picture of our entire unit and I always big my mom about how different she looks now =)

But things have definitely changed.
For starters the brownies now wear orange and blue. No Brown. No Dresses. I mean I had a stripped brownie shirt too but I always wore the dress... not sure they could make and orange and blue dress though! Never the less my brownies wear orange and blue shirts with blue pants, blue badge scarf, and a white tie with orange maple leafs. They run in three circle groups: fairies, kelpies, and sprites. And they are a big crowd this year as we are coming in on twenty which is a big difference from our group of about seven full timers.

Anyways enough about all that. I created this blog to share my endeavors with the world. One of my other leaders 'Rainbow Owl' suggested that I should post some of my handiwork online. I like to do up all sorts of things in publisher and utilize them with the girls. I work at a print shop so it helps =) I make badge sheets, sign in sheets, awards, certificates, chorus books, program work, crafts, newsletters, almost anything really and the best part is that they are all fairly versatile.
I thought this would also be a great way to share what we are doing and planning and even share some links of things that I have found useful.

Well I guess I will leave it at that for now. Not sure how to go about setting this all up so I will focus on that and then start posting! Anchors away! =)

Yours in Guiding,
